Color-changing clothes have never really fascinated me. However, through a friend I discovered the piece of clothing that made me change my mind: the “Ice Knit” crewneck sweater from Italian brand Stone Island. The uniqueness of the sweater lies in the double knit construction, where the outside is made from thermo-sensitive yarn (thus changing color when exposed to the cold) and the inside is made of pure wool.
Stone Island might not be on your fashion radar, but there a multiple reasons why it should be. The company was founded in 1982 by Italian designer Massimo Osti. The brand has made a name for itself with its extensive research into fibers, textiles, dying methods and surface treatments, implementing the results in innovative designs such as the Frost Finish line or the Ghost capsule collection. Basically, what we expect to see in the future, Stone Island has been doing since its beginnings: transform, enhance and optimize clothing through various techniques and processes. According to the blog FashNerd.com, Stone Island has “discovered new materials and production techniques that have never previously been used in the clothing industry.“

2017 was a relevant year for Stone Island in terms of commercialization. The garment manufacturer got to collaborate with the iconic streetwear and skateboarding brand Supreme for Fall/Winter 2017-18. The collab-collection encompasses 22 pieces, which launched on October 5th 2017. One of the most stellar garments is the Lamy Cover down jacket made from super lightweight nylon, treated with polyurethane on the outside (water resistant and warming) and showcasing an exclusive Supreme Artwork floral print, which was digitally printed onto the jacket. Unsurprisingly, the entire collection is sold out online.
And now, the label has just dropped another fashion tech treat: the “Ice Jacket Si Check Grid Camo”. The thermo-sensitive yarn changes not just in color, but transforms from creme white into a camouflage pattern when the temperature drops. Nothing cooler to beat the winter cold.
